Why Is Succotash Called Succotash?
Succotash is called Succotash because the origin of the word comes from the Narragansett language of the Native American tribes that lived in the eastern region of the United States. The word “msíckquatash” was used to describe a dish made from boiled beans and corn. When English settlers encountered this dish, they anglicized the word to “succotash.” It has been a staple food in the American South for centuries and has many variations depending on the region in which it is prepared.
