What Makes Higher Proof Moonshine?
Higher proof moonshine is made through a process called “fractional distillation.” During this process, the initial distillation is done normally, separating the alcohol from the rest of the mash. The resulting distillate is then further distilled multiple times, producing a higher proof alcohol with each distillation. The goal is to separate the alcohol from more and more of the water and other solids in the mash, resulting in a higher concentration of pure alcohol. The result is a concentrated, potent, and often illegal alcohol.
