Why Is It Called A Gimlet?
The cocktail known as a Gimlet is believed to have been named after a tool used for drilling small holes, also called a gimlet. The drink is said to have been invented by British sailors in the 19th century who added lime juice to their gin rations to help combat scurvy. The addition of lime juice was said to “bore into” the gin, similar to the way a gimlet bores into wood. Thus, the drink was named after the tool.
