Why Is It Called Anadama Bread?
Anadama bread is named after a man named Anadama, who lived in Rockport, Massachusetts in the 19th century. According to legend, Anadama made this bread one night when his wife was too tired to prepare their usual cornmeal mush for dinner. He mixed cornmeal, flour, yeast, and molasses together and baked it into a loaf of bread. His wife asked what he had made, and he replied, “Anadama bread.” The bread became popular in the area and was eventually named after its creator.
