When Was The First Case Of Celiac Disease?
While the earliest descriptions of symptoms resembling celiac disease date back to the Greek physician Aretaeus of Cappadocia in the 2nd century AD, it wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that doctors began to recognize celiac disease as a distinct clinical entity. The first clear clinical description of celiac disease was given in 1888 by British physician Samuel Gee, who identified the characteristic weight loss, chronic diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort that are still diagnostic hallmarks of the condition today.
