How Do They Make Root Beer?
Root beer is typically made by mixing water, sugar, and various herbs and spices, such as sassafras, sarsaparilla, and vanilla, with a small amount of yeast. The mixture is then allowed to ferment for several hours or days, during which time the yeast consumes the sugar and produces carbon dioxide gas. This carbonation gives the root beer its signature bubbles and fizz. Often, root beer additionally contains phosphoric acid or citric acid which can affect its flavour profile and mouthfeel. Today, many commercially produced root beers no longer contain sassafras due to health concerns, instead relying on artificial flavors to achieve a similar taste.
