Why Is Pasta Called Puttanesca?
There are several theories about the origin of the name puttanesca for pasta. One theory suggests that the strong, pungent flavors of the dish are reminiscent of the strong aromas of the bordellos of Naples, once frequented by courtesans or “puttane” in Italian. Another theory suggests that the dish was a quick and easy meal prepared by Neapolitan prostitutes between customers, using pantry staples like anchovies and canned tomatoes. Despite the uncertain origin, pasta puttanesca continues to be a popular and flavorful dish enjoyed by many.
