Why Is Soy Sauce Not Vegan?
Soy sauce is often not considered vegan because its traditional recipe involves the use of fish, namely bonito fish flakes, to add flavor and umami. Therefore, even though soybeans are vegan, some soy sauces are not. However, some brands make vegan soy sauce alternatives, often labeled as “shoyu,” which use only soybeans in their production process, making them suitable for vegans.
